Reader Submission: Jenna

my new short hair cut

Thanks to reader Jenna for submitting this photo. Asymmetrical cuts can be hard to pull off - not to mention require more balls to get in the first place - but you wear it well. You also apparently have a lot of chutzpah. Kudos.

A reader submission. Low-maintenance short with some nice face framing. Let’s give this adorable girl a hand.

Says this reader, “I don’t understand why I was hesitant in the first place to get my hair cut into a pixie, this rocks.”
And so does black cateye eyeliner with short hair, if I may say so myself. Looks great!

A reader asks:
"I’m thinking about cutting my hair short. I don’t know if it looks good on me though. I’ve never tried anything that risky… what if it doesn’t work out right? This is the hair that I want… But I’m totally scared. Help me please!"
Gosh the girl in this pic is adorable! I don’t know if I could pull that off either. But to answer your question, I think the women who look best with short hair are those with more narrow faces, proportionate body types and are generally confident and kick-ass. Beyond that? It’s all about finding a hairstyle that’s complementary to you. Splurge on a good hairstylist who will not just give you a copycat cut to the one above, but will talk you through how to tweak it so that it complements your face and your features.
Also, be sure to check out all the excellent short hair resources I’ve put in the sidebar. Actually, they’ve been there for a few months after I solicited readers for suggestions on cool sites featuring girls with short hair, but I never formally announced them. So, yeah, this is me formally announcing them to each and every one of you: http://girlswithshorthair.tumblr.com/
Good luck!

Don’t let the hair wear you.
Reader Lee cuts her hair herself, initially inspired by Audrey, but today styling it more ala Edie.
One thing Lee pointed out in her e-mail is how easygoing and confident short haircuts look. Agreed! You know the saying “Wear the dress, don’t let the dress wear you”? I don’t really like to talk/feature celebrities much here, but look at someone like Tina Fey. Her dresses ALWAYS wear her. She’s uncomfortable to look at. But someone like Chloe Sevigny could wear her same dresses and look like a complete badass.
The same thing goes for hair. If you think you’ll look horrible with short hair, you will. If you’re self-conscious about it after you cut it, you’ll look self-conscious. But if you truly embrace it? To me, that’s beauty, and the type of ladies I like to feature here on this blog.
Think you or someone you know qualifies? Remember you can submit pics for yourself right here.

The best way to accessorize short hair in my humble opinion? Huge, outlandish accessories. Personally, my drug of choice is a pair of bold glasses and/or obnoxiously large earrings. I’m guessing this reader might have a special place in her heart for necklaces.
And I wouldn’t expect anything less. It’s not like most girls with short hair are afraid of standing out. If we were afraid, we would look like this. And life’s way too short to be that boring.

This and the previous picture are both reader submissions. And both effortless, ever so slightly unkempt shags. I like.
